Door types & fire doors
Check the door.
Choose the cut.
Two doors can look alike and need very different handling. Rodger checks construction, finish and the available trimming allowance before deciding what work is appropriate.

Different allowances.
Solid timber
The timber, joints, condition and finish all matter. We assess the edge and the clearance needed rather than assuming any amount can be removed.
Hollow-core & moulded
The edge lipping can limit what can be trimmed. Manufacturer information helps us check whether shortening is suitable.
Veneered & engineered
Surface veneers and factory finishes need careful handling. Tell us the make or model if you have it.
Fire-rated doors
More than an ordinary door.
A fire door forms part of a doorset. Its manufacturer’s instructions, permitted trimming, gaps, frame, seals and hardware matter together.
We cannot decide a fire door is suitable for trimming from appearance alone. Tell us it is fire-rated and send photographs of labels or identifying marks, the frame and the catching edge.
If the necessary information is unavailable or the work falls outside the stated allowance, we will explain the next step before any cutting is agreed.

Look after the finish.
Cut edges may need suitable sealing or finishing. Tell us whether the door is painted, stained, veneered or factory finished so we can agree what is required.
We also check where it rubs. A frame or hinge adjustment may be the appropriate answer when the bottom edge is not the cause.

How much can come off the bottom?
There is no single allowance for every door. It depends on the product, its construction, previous trimming and manufacturer guidance.
Can you identify my door from a photo?
Photos help with an initial assessment, but may not establish a product’s construction or fire rating. Include maker’s information where available.
What photos are useful?
The whole door, the catching edge and any label or identifying mark. For a fire door, include the frame and seals too.
Let’s take a look

Show us your doors.
Tell Rodger how many doors are catching and what has changed. Two photos are a useful start: the whole door and the edge that rubs.
Not sure what kind of door you have? That’s fine. Send what you can and we’ll work from there.
